TAORMINA SERVICES - Residential Solid Waste Collection and Recycling

Taormina Industries, in partnership with its service cities, operates one of the most successful residential solid waste collection and recycling programs in the nation. Called RECYCLE, the program is a fully automated curbside system. Begun in 1989 in response to California Assembly Bill 939, the state's recycling mandate, RECYCLE has accomplished or exceeded all requirements of the law to date. Adopted in January 1990, AB 939 requires a 25 percent reduction in landfill usage by 1995 and 50 percent by the year 2000. Cities must comply with the new law or risk substantial penalties.

RECYCLE helps cities meet these goals because of its extremely efficient system of residential collection. Taormina Industries' specially-designed trucks collect trash and recyclable materials form residential customers with ease. The collection trucks have robotic arms specifically designed for pick-up of the customized containers that are utilized.

Two containers, one for trash and one for recyclables, are provided to each household. The containers are equipped with tight fitting lids for health and safety and with wheels for easy maneuvering.

At Taormina Industries, customer convenience is the number one priority, thus, RECYCLE is designed for convenience. Residents commingle all recyclables in one container. Separate bins for glass, paper, aluminum or other recyclables are not required.

After curbside collection, all recyclables are taken to the CVT Regional Material Recovery Facility for separation and processing, while collected trash is processed at CVT's Regional Waste Transfer Center before being transported to local County landfills.

Accepting more than 70 different recyclable materials, Taormina Industries' RECYCLE programs are designed to maximize recovery rates of recyclable materials as well as increase participant rates. The RECYCLE program is not limited to single-family households, it also includes multi-family residential developments.

RECYCLE's versatility also accommodates for the addition of a variety of new materials which will maximize the recovery rate of the municipal waste stream. Thus, in some cities, RECYCLE includes composting. A third container is provided exclusively for green waste, which constitutes approximately one-third of the total waste stream. The diversion rates in these areas average more than 60 percent. Thus, AB 939 guidelines are met much earlier than the year 2000 deadline.

As a result of the RECYCLE program's success, Taormina Industries has been the recipient of several industry awards. Recognition has been received from the Solid Waste Association of North America and the Department of Conservation/Division of Recycling.
