TAORMINA SERVICES - CVT Waste Transfer Center

In the early 1980's Taormina Industries expanded its solid waste collection programs and developed a cost effective, environmentally friendly and sanitary method of consolidating solid waste. Thus, in 1984, the CVT Waste Transfer Center emerged as one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the industry.

CVT engineers sought to develop a waste transfer operation that would provide a consolidation process to minimize costs by reducing travel to the local landfills as well as provide a safe and healthy environment for surrounding communities. With one of the largest daily volume permitted capacity facilities in the United States, CVT was especially sensitive to protecting the environment.

With innovation and efficiency as key priorities, CVT works toward producing cost savings that can be passed on to its commercial customers and city partners.

By consolidating the waste at its Anaheim facility, savings are achieved through a reduction of the number of trips to and from the landfills by smaller collection trucks. Utilizing maximum-volume transfer trucks decreases the number of round-trip journeys, saving vehicle use and fuel. This allows the smaller trucks more time in their communities to service collection, and reduces the number of collection vehicles needed to complete daily routes.

In addition to these cost savings, CVT lowers pollution-based emissions with the consolidation process. Because the trucks generate relatively equal amounts of emissions, regardless of their size, using larger volume trucks, with fewer trips, results in substantial decrease in emissions.

With the benefits of consolidation quite evident, the challenges of operating a waste transfer center in its Anaheim facility means that CVT must provide the most sanitary conditions possible for the benefit of the workers and surrounding neighborhoods.

The state-of-the-art CVT Waste Transfer Center features insect, rodent and odor control, litter containment, fire suppression and dust abatement in tandem with the latest consolidation technology.

The main component of the Waste Transfer Center is the compaction pit, where non-recyclable waste materials are immediately deposited, consolidated into transfer trailers and transported to landfills.

CVT Waste Transfer Center meets and exceeds fire safety requirements with the use of fire sprinklers, fire extinguishers, fire hoses and fire retarding devices. All solid waste loads are inspected for possible appearance of illegal hazardous wastes. Workers are required to wear safety clothing, ear and eye protection.

As a good neighbor, Taormina Industries extends courtesies to the surrounding Anaheim commercial community. Taormina Industries deploys a team of street sweepers to the local area to collect any debris or dust that may find its way out of the facility.
